Your host sets his own home on fire just to get you to leave. Seriously, that's a big hint.
Read Killing For God. If you haven't read Michael Yon's blog before, there is simply no better first hand account of at least one small corner of the war.
A Nazi sympathizer will be leading the Austrian parliament. Here is the reaction from the leader of Austria's Jewish community:
We are not concerned; we are not in any danger," Dr. Ariel Muzicant, president of Austria's Jewish community, told the Post on Monday. He said Kampl "is a jerk... who really believes what he is saying. [But] it's not something that hurts us, it hurts this country. Half the Bundesrat is going to leave out of protest [whenever he speaks]."
It looks like their survival instincts haven't evolved one whit.
The world continues to not give a damn. Robert Mugabe's thugocracy, having run out of white farmers to murder, terrorize and demonize, has long since moved on to murdering, terrorizing demonizing the citizens of Zimbabwe who can neither flee nor fight back. Of course, since Mugabe is neither American or Jewish, this latest atrocity, the sadistic destruction of peoples' homes, property and livelihoods, will be met with a giant yawn in the world community (imagine for a moment if Israel did something like this in Ramallah or if the U.S. did this in Basra).
Have you ever gone to the multiplex and then stayed to see another movie? Last night I decided to see the sneak preview of Cinderella Man starring Russell Crowe and Renée Zellweger. That was at 7:30. When I got out of the theatre at a few minutes after 10, I wasn't ready to go home and decided to stay and watch another movie. But what to see? I was torn between Madagascar, the animated film that had just come out, and Unleashed, the Jet Li action flick that had been out for a while. Finally, I decided to go watch unleashed. When that let out at a bit after midnight, what was just starting but ... you guessed it ... Madagascar. Here's a short review of all three movies:
For the latest GBWT, I give you the Memorial Day special: Some of the many beautiful women of the U.S. Armed Forces. Enjoy:
UPDATED!!
Stefania of the Italian blog Free Thoughts, who often comments here on TDB, has recently had opinion pieces published in both The Jerusalem Post (concerning the situation in Iran)and in The American Thinker (concerning Cuba). Both are excellent and I recommend that you check them out.
Racecar driver Robby Gordon is whining about Danica Patrick having an unfair advantage because she weighs less than the othr drivers. Yup ... and she also has less muscle mass to deal with the stress of a 500 mile race. The whining by Gordon and others has nothing to do with Patrick's weight and everything to do with the fact that their privates shrink up oto the size of tic-tacs at the thought of being whipped by a woman on the track. If it were otherwise we would have heard complaints about pole sitter Tony Kanaan who weighs just 145 pounds, Vitor Meira who weighs 141, Kosuuke Matsuura who weighs 145 and many other drivers, past and present, who are 60+ pounds lighter than some of their competitors. Hell, if it was a big deal you wouldn't have a bunch of champions who weigh over 200 pounds (as you do now) and the sport would be dominated by men the size of jockeys.
As a side note, for the last four years Gordon has raced in the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 and the Indy 500 on the same day. This year he just wasn't up for it for some reason and says that he won't go back to IRL (Indy Racing League) racing until Patrick's "advantage" is taken away. You know, if Patrick ever decides to take up NASCAR racing, Gordon might protest his way out of a job.
The folks at DU are reliable as always. Just in time for Memorial Day, DUers have come out in force to tell you what some of them think of America and Americans (the title of the DU thread is a bit too obscene for this generally PG-13 blog; I mean, my neice in Russia reads this ...). Here are some choice quotes fron that thread (warning - quoted profanity follows):
When we last heard from HBO boxing analyst Jim Lampley, he was citing a crazed DUer to prove that the election was stolen from John Kerry in the crime of the millenia. That earned him a rhetorical beating at the keyboard of Michael York, to the point where a retreating and defensive Lampley was protesting that he was out of his element. Well, undaunted, Lampley is back, this time with the ever-popular Iraq=Vietnam meme (even though it actually looks absolutely nothing like Vietnam in any significant respect whatsoever ... at the present casualty rate (over the last 4 months) we will have to be in Iraq for over 80 years before we approach Vietnam-level casualty totals. Yeah, it's just like Vietnam.
Jim Lampley would do fine as a DU poster. He managed to throw out a cheap insult at Donald Rumsfeld without resorting to any hard facts or contributing anything thought provoking whatsoever. He'd do fine as a DUer but as a blogger, even a Leftist blogger, he's quite a disappointment.
Even as the government of Ariel Sharon is making unprecedented steps towards making a Palestinian state a reality and is asking the Israeli people to make tremendous, unilateral sacrifices, the Anglican Church is following the lead of Leftist British academics in moving towards divestment from Israeli companies and Israelis that “support the occupation of Palestinian lands." This initiative is being spearheaded by the Anglican Peace and Justice Network, an anti-Israel organization that has long been trying to hurt Israel. What to do? Well, this:
If the Anglican Church goes ahead with divestment, to any degree whatsoever, I will seek to publicize every major company that does business with or supports the Anglican Church and call for a boycott of those companies until they cease their business with that church. Of course, this is a tiny blog with a relatively small readership but I don't think that I'll be alone.
Two bombs went off in a predominantly Christian town in Indonesia (a country which is over 90% Muslim) ... one to kill a few people, the second, larger one, to murder the rescuers. In all, 22 people were slaughtered, including a three year old boy. Naturally, officials are acting baffled as to who could have committed such a crime ... probably some young Australian woman ... good thing they're cracking down on those.
Things have changed since we last reported on his condition. Apparently, he's getting better. Hmmm ... Perhaps it's time to recheck the Pope and Yasser Arafat ... you know, just to be thorough.
This was at a protest in Pakistan:
No good boxing this weekend (there's a pay-per-view featuring the retiring (yet again) Julio Cesar Chavez but I wouldn't really recommend it even if it was free) but if you have a chance to see it, don't miss Kostya Tszyu vs. Ricky Hatton next Saturday on Showtime. It should be an excellent fight. As for this weekend, of course the surging Yankees are playing the reeling Red Sox. As I write this the Sox are up 5-0 in the 4th. The Mets, who are also doing well after their regularly scheduled drubbing in the Atlanta series (the Braves simply own the Mets; there's no use denying it) are taking on the Marlins.
The sporting event that has me most interested, though, is the Indy 500. Now, auto racing is one of the few sports that I don't follow carefully and I never understood the appeal of watching an entire 500 mile race on TV but I have to tell you that I'm pulling for Danica Patrick, the 23 year old rookie racing phenom that might actually have a legit shot at being the first woman to win the big race. And yeah, I'm pulling for her for purely sexist reasons. I think that it would be great ... great for women in sports, great for auto racing and pretty great for society in general (and especially that segment of it which loves auto racing) for a young, charismatic woman to win the Indy 500 on her first attempt. A megastar would be born in an instant and thousands of girls all over the American South would be sporting Patrick caps, t-shirts, etc. within a week.
What else? Well, the NBA playoffs are still going on and this is the first time in a very, very long time that all four teams in the conference finals had a legitimate shot to win it all. That said, the Suns are now in a big hole, down 2-0 and going into San Antonio against a fundamentally sound, disciplined team. Most people are writing the Suns off but I think that they still have a chance if they can win today. Both of their losses were extremely close and they are a team with great leadership in the form of Steve Nash. If they don't win tonight, it's over. As for the Detroit-Miami series, it's a coin flip but I lean, by the very slimmest of margins, towards Detroit, simply because they have more weapons and are therefore less likely to lose if any one player is having an off night.
Finally, I'm not much of an animal activist and I think that PETA are a bunch of idiots who harm their own cause, but I am absolutely with PAWS and the ASPCA with respect to their view on the Omak Suicide Race. I'm sorry, but any race that causes four horses to die in a single event (as recently happened) and horses to collapse and die of heart attacks at the finish line is not "no different than a horse race" as the promoters insist but actually amounts to little more than organized animal cruelty. Just because it's a tradition doesn't mean that it's a tradition that's worth preserving. The people of Omak, Washington need to find another centerpiece event for their annual Stampede (which otherwise looks like a whole lot of fun).
Tallglassofmilk of Drink This has blogged about the fact that Congressman John Conyers Jr., who represents perhaps the most heavily Islamic congressional district in the United States, has decided to make political hay out of the Newsweek "flushed Koran" debacle by introducing a bill in the House of Representatives that, in part:
Here's a classic by Samuel Taylor Coleridge ... made me want to get the fishing rod out of the closet and find a place to sit and skip stones until something bit:
Of course, this probably doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, since Prince Abdullah has been the actual Saudi leader for some time now. Well, it won't mean much unless someone tries a powergrab. Unlikely, but it's something to watch for.
In a case that seems to pretty much define judicial insanity, an Indonesian court sentenced Australian Schapelle Corby to 20 years in prison for smuggling 9 pounds of marijuana into Bali. This seems ridiculous on its face. Who smuggles marijuana into Bali, much less nine pounds of it? The drugs were almost certainly not hers and yet, this backwards country is content to destroy a young woman's life (as well as a chunk of their tourist industry) against all common sense. I hope that the Australian government stands up for its citizen who, it seems, has been twice victimized; once by the drug dealers who planted the drugs in her bag and once by the idiotic Indonesian courts ... the same courts which sentenced terrorist leader Abu Bakar Bashir - who participated in the slaughter of 202 people (including 88 Australians) to 30 months in prison. When that psychotic mass murderer gets out, Corby will still have 18 years remaining on her sentence.
After this, any Westerner would have to be nuts to travel to Indonesia.
Folks, it's all the same war. Don't forget that. New York, Moscow, Madrid, Beslan, Amsterdam, Baghdad, Gaza City, Manila ... it's all the same war, all over the world. Need further proof? Two more Chechen Islamists were just arrested for the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, who was murdered in broad daylight and had a hate-filled manifesto pinned to his chest with a knife ... for being an enemy of Islam.
Apparently, the British are unaware of the coming war and are busy trying to disarm themselves completely. That's right. Certain Brits want to outlaw the large kitchen knife. The large kitchen knife, for God's sake! I mean, seriously, what next? How about no large rocks in gardens and no drivers ... just putters. Hammers and screwdrivers and sharp pencils will be forbidden and owning a belt sander or, God forbid, a chainsaw will be cause to bring the gallows back to Britain. I mean, if they're're going to be safe, let them be really safe. Let them strive for a Britain without pointy things sharp corners or hot things and prozac in the drinking water.
I wonder if it's too late to make Britain a state ... I bet we can get two or three useful states out of it ... and give the useless remainder to the EU.

In spite of President Bush's explicit threat to veto legislation allowing for greater embryonic stem cell research, a Republican House of Representatives passed the bill (though by a 238-194 margin - far short of the 290 votes needed to stave off a possible veto).
This is the thread where you, the loyal TDB reader, get to direct any question on the subject of politics, world affairs, etc. to Rumsfeld, the political cat (as opposed to Bogie ... who is social and, more and more, pukey ... yesterday he had the presence of mind to lay out some paper towels before puking on them, which was considerate and kind of amazing ... and then he thoughtfully covered the mess with one of my favorite shirts, which was a little less amazing). Anyway, back to Rummy. Ask him about anything from hot topics like stem cell research and the fate of the EU to classics like drug legalization and the Palestinian right of return and he will do his level best to give you an answer.
Some very good bloggers got together and formed Media Slander, a blog devoted to "hold[ing] journalists and bloggers to high ethical standards regarding coverage of the War on Terror and other military-related issues." A commendable goal. They're off to a good start. Check out their latest post about the disconnect between a Reuters' headline and the facts in the story.

At this stage in her career Helen Thomas is no more a reporter than Al Franken or Rush Limbaugh or, for that matter, James Guckert. She is a propagandist for leftist ideology who is perfectly willing to take quotes entirely out of context (as she does in the linked piece) in order to score political points, She has long since stopped pretending to be a reporter. If you invite her, then why not invite Hannity and Coulter and Moore? They are absolutely no different as far as what they do. White House press briefings should be for the press. Propogandists and pundits have their place, but that that is not it.
All of the art posts have been updated so that the paintings are now resized to reflect the much wider template. You should be able to see a lot more detail now. A couple of the paintings were also replaced with better versions that I was able to find. Check them out.
This painting, called "Hide and Seek," is by the 19th century French artist James Tissot. It now hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Wqashington D.C.:
I'm just sayin'. The judges have been promoting him as the winner since about week 3. Personally, I liked Vonzell and am rather fond of Carrie (who really belongs on Nashville Star). Anyway, barring addiction or conviction or other rock-star obstacles, Bo should be the most marketable winner yet. I'm just not a big fan. Maybe it's the dashiki shirts.
Update: Man, was I ever wrong about that. I didn't see that coming at all.
Remember Standard Form 180 that Senator John Kerry promised, on live television, to sign?:
Now I'm set to fly cross-country in a couple of weeks for a meeting. If it goes well, Rummy, Bogie and I may be leaving San Francisco permanently in the very near future. Scary, exciting stuff.
