A Documentary That You Should Not Miss - Terror In Moscow

In 2002 Islamist terrorists took over 700 people hostage in a theatre in Moscow.  They wired the building with explosives and threatened to murder everyone.  The episode ended in tragedy, though not as horribly as it might have.  Tomorrow, at 11:30 a.m. on HBO (check local listings for local times and rebroadcast times), there will be a documentary on this horror called Terror in Moscow.  If you care about the War Against Islamism (and you should), you should make an effort to watch this ir catch it later or, if you have it, through your On-Demand system.  Why?  Because I assure you that if it happened in a  Moscow Theatre in 2002 it can happen in Carnegie Hall or the Kennedy Center or Radio City Music Hall or The Grand Ole Opry House in 2005.

Update:  I just got done watching this(it's under an hour long) and it was very powerful.  I think that maybe it was more powerful for me because I understood all of the Russian being spoken.  It ended with a nasty bit of moral equivalency, trying to justify the actions of the death-loving mass murderers but it is still well worth watching.  If anyone does watch it, please let me know.

Communist Schmuck Calls for Revolution in the United States - Gains Hero Status at DU

Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan leader who is the declared enemy of the United States, has called for the "oppressed" U. S. citizens to "liberate" their nation

Naturally, this has made him a hero at Democratic Underground, where the denizens dream of Ché and bloody revolution.

Tonight's Fight

The other day I was chatting with a friend of mine who is a semi-active boxer.  In his prime, he was world-class, fighting the likes of world champions Roberto Duran (who he beat), Hector "Macho" Camacho, Vinny Paz (formerly Vinny Pazienza), Wilfred Benitez (who he also beat) and "Terrible" Terry Norris.  We were talking about the woeful lack of boxing coverage on the internet and in the media in general.

Friday Poetry - A Day Late

Yesterday was a bit exhausting so there was no poetry.  I'm also woefully behind in my memes .  Anyway, I recently read this story of horrid mysoginy (hat tip, LGF) and I thought of Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale," which I read long ago (the nightmarish, misogynistic world that Atwood describes exists today not in a far-right theocratic America, as Atwood suggested, but in the Islamic nations; I find it sad that American "progressive" groups and the Western world in general has expressed so little concern over the brutal and barbaric treatment of women everywhere that Islamism takes root).  Anyway, I went looking for Atwood poems and this is one that I like.  It has nothing to do with feminism or misogyny, but I thought I'd share how I wound up picking it:

Do You Know What's Really Frustrating?

When someone calls you and leaves a message that "It's an emergency!!  For God's sake, call me back!"

And then leaves their phone off the hook.  Ugh.

Large Mammal? Me?

So now The Daily Blitz has been declared a "large mammal." You know, I don't think of myself as "large."  "Big boned," maybe.  In any event, these are interesting times at TDB as new people seem to be discovering it.  These are also heady times in the blogosphere in general as some of the bigger players are looking for ways to make a big thing even bigger.

Recently, some people have suggested that I market some TDB-themed products through Cafe Press or other such outlets.  I've given it some thought and it seems to an idea that's worth pursuing.  One thing that I'd like to do before I started on something like that is to have a Daily Blitz logo which would easily associate any product with this blog.  To this end, I am asking for help.  If anyone can think of or (even better) design a nifty little logo for TDB, I would be eternally grateful.  More than that, if your logo is chosen for TDB, I will happily place a big, gaudy ad for your blog (if you have one) prominently on TDB for 30 days.  If you don't have a blog I'll gladly advertise your home address (kidding!).

Finally, the first person to offer up a logo design, whether it is chosen or not, gets a haiku written in their honor by Bogie.  Please leave your suggestions in the comments section or e-mail them to me at daily_blitz@yahoo.com .

Portland Bails on The War Against Islamism

The city of Portland, Oregon, which is not far from the Canadian border where a terrorist tried to enter the United States in 2000, withdrew police officers from the FBI's Joint Terrorism Taskforce because the FBI refused to give the Portland Mayor Tom Potter (who is a complete and utter moonbat) Top Secret security clearance and a secret decoder ring.  The subsequent temper tantrum by the mayor and Portland City Council has put the citizens of Portland and, in fact, all of America at greater risk of terrorist attack.  There are a hundred cities throughout the country working with the FBI to detect and prevent terrorism.  Portland, Oregon is the only one to have turned its back on its citizens and the rest of the country.

As you can see from his site. Mayor Potter is soliciting comments.  Here's the contact iformation:

Phone: 503-823-4120
Fax: 503-823-3588 (I understand that this is particularly effective)

"My life will not be complete unless America is destroyed."

That is what murdering traitor Hassan Akbar wrote in his diary in 1997.  Now that piece of subhuman filth would like you to know that he's sorry.  I'm sure that the needle in his future has nothing to do with his sudden remorse.  I hate the fact that he still gets to wear the uniform of the 101st Airborne and I don't like that he'll be getting off easy with a needle and a comfy gurney rather than a rope or a firing squad (if, in fact, he is sentenced to death ... I can't imagine that he wouldn't be).  Here's hoping that his last days on this earth are filled with fear,  misery and the knowledge that his life will not be complete.

Anyone But Hillary? No Way!

I just came across the Anyone But Hillary 2008 website and you know what?  Count me out of that movement.  Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely no fan of Hillary Clinton.  I think that she is an opportunistic, disingenuous carpetbagging powerjunkie.  That said, we can do far, far worse.  Hillary, whatever she says in the course of campaigning, voted for the war and has been a staunch supporter of Israel (her smooch with Suha Arafat notwithstanding) throughout her Senate career.  She is more or less a moderate Democrat, like her husband.  Moreover, she  is not dumb like John Kerry, she does not hate America like Cynthia McKinney and Jim McDermott and many other Leftists, she's not prone to flying off the handle at critical moments like Howard Dean, she's not a complete loon like Dennis Kucinich, she's not a raving bigot like Robert Byrd, she hasn't pandered to the extreme left wing like Barbara Boxer and she's hasn't let recent Democratic electoral setbacks turn her into  a lunatic like Al Gore.  She's also not a xenophobic paleocon isolationist ala Pat Buchanan or someone who shamelessly panders to the extreme right wing like Tom Delay and Rick Santorum or just plain nutty like Jim Bunning.

In short, there are many, many (many!) people that I would rather have as President in 2008 but ABH?  Please.  She's got a lot of work to do to get anywhere near the bottom of the barrel these days.

Ted Kennedy Marks The First Anniversary of the Abu Ghraib Scandal

Ted Kennedy is showing great outrage over the Abu Ghraib atrocities that were uncovered a year ago.  Bravo, Senator Kennedy!  Still no word on how Senator Kennedy intends to commemorate the thirty-sixth anniversary of the Chappaquiddick tragedy.  Now there's a cover-up that has stayed covered-up.

Germans Are Forgetting The Holocaust

According to a recent poll, 50% of Germans under the age of 24 don't know what the Holocaust was.  Naturally, there are practically no Jews in Germany to remind them.  I think that movies like Schindler's List, Escape From Sobibor, The Pianist and the documentary Shoah should be mandatory viewing for all German schoolchildren.  Maus should be required reading in 9th grade or thereabouts.  This is not to punish them for the sins of their forebears but to tryto make sure that they do not repeat these same sins.  It is unthinkable that just two generations after the most heinous crime in human history the nation that committed the atrocity is allowing it to fade from memory.

The Last Syrian Troops Leave Lebanon

This is a big step in containing Baathist and Islamist influence in the Middle East.  Syria still needs to withdraw its "advisors" and its puppets in the Lebanese government and especially the Lebanese military still need to be flushed out but without direct military support from Syria, Hezbollah will be weakened and Lebanon will be freer to act in its own interests rather than in Syria's and Iran's.  Keep an eye on the May 29th elections.  They will be a bellweather of the direction that the new Lebanon will take.

U.S. Solidiers Cleared of Any Wrongdoing in Sgrena/Calipari Shooting

U.S. investigators have found that American troops who shot dead an Italian agent at a Baghdad checkpoint on March 4 committed no wrongdoing and will not be disciplined, an Army official said on Monday.

Good news.

Another Murder From the Culture of Mysoginy

A Jordanian man murdered his own sister because she besmirched his family honor.  How?  Her picture was on his friend's camera phone.  That's it.  About a month ago another Jordanian man stabbed his sister to death because he found out that she agreed to marry for love.  This was the fifth such reported murder so far this year.  What kind of punishment can these cold blooded murderers expect?  They can expect to be free, with their sense of "honor" intact, in a maximum of one year.  Last year there were nineteen reported honor killings in Jordan where men murdered their sisters, daughters, nieces, etc.

The horror is not just that this barbaric culture has infested the Middle East and Afghanistan and Pakistan and India and much of the Arab and Muslim world.  The horror is that its metastisizing throughout the rest of the world and precious little is being done to stop it.

This painting, entitled "The Pigeon Fancier," is by prolific nineteenth century Russian painter Vasily Perov.  Perov had an extraordinary talent for conveying the personalities and individual quirks of his subjects.  This painting, which is displayed in The Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, is an excellent example of that talent:

Tales of My Father - Father Frost

My dad is an interesting guy who has lived a very, very interesting life (so far) a while back I wrote a long post about something that happened to me and him back in November of 1989.  Unfortunately, after spending quite a lot of time on it, I lost the post to a computer glitch.

I'm going to try again, but this time, I'll start with a quick story about me and my dad in 1975.  Maybe I'll make this a regular feature.  We'll see.

Friday Poetry - When Age Catches Us

In the previous post we were talking about age and adulthood.  One poet who wrote about this was Russian Sergei Yesenin.  In fact, he wrote the following poem, about his youth abandoning him and his death approaching at the age of twenty-six.  Sadly, he was not wrong.  He died at thirty, handsome and extraordinarily popular, by his own hand.

DUers Take Their Cue From Kos

Here is what Markos Zuniga ("Kos") said about the brutal murder of four Americans in legally working in Fallujah about a year ago:

Every death should be on the front page (2.70 / 40)

Let the people see what war is like. This isn’t an Xbox game. There are real repercussions to Bush’s folly.

That said, I feel nothing over the death of merceneries [sic]. They aren’t in Iraq because of orders, or because they are there trying to help the people make Iraq a better place. They are there to wage war for profit. Screw them.

by kos on Thu Apr 1st, 2004 at 12:08:56 PDT>
Zuniga has made every effort to eliminate all traces of his words but the echoes continue to reverberate.  Here is some of what was said today by his ideological and moral fellow travellers at Democratic Underground in the wake of the deaths of six Americans in Iraq today:
