Ol' Docs-In-Socks to Plead Guilty

Sandy Berger will plead guilty  to illegally taking classified material from the National Archives.  The "they accidentally fell into my socks" defense fails yet again.

Paul Wolfowitz Unanimously Confirmed as President of the World Bank

This is, if I recall correctly, a ten year term.  Barring death, resignation or removal, Wolfowitz will be ther until 2015.  I find it rather amusing ... and hope he can do a decent job.

Ask Bogie, Vol. V

By popular demand, we bring you yet another "Ask Bogie" thread.  Do you have a question on clothing or cuisine or dating or theatre or the upcoming baseball season or Saturday's fight between James Toney and John Ruiz  or just about anything other than politics or Terri Schiavo (which is Rummy's bailiwick - and Rummy has the day off)?  Esquire and GQ have nothing on the cool kitty who's in the know, so if you have a question Bogie's sure to have your answer.

The Daily Blitz, Now 1000% Faster

This site has been loading like molasses in february but not anymore.  I've removed the counters that readers couldn't access anyway and now it loads pretty much in the blink of an eye.  I'm a moron for not having done this months ago.  Now, what can we post about today?  Maybe something non-political to start ...

Right-Wing Morons

The Schiavo case is really getting them crawling out of the woodwork.  Apparently, members of the Michigan Militia wanted to storm the hospice and remove Terri Schiavo.  Their plans were foiled by the FBI, with the assistance of the Schindlers' attorney, who the Militia leader had contacted.  I did not want Terri Schiavo to be starved to death but now that she is obviously going to die, I hope that it is soon, for everyone's sake.  I fear that somewhere, some moron(s) is talking himself into doing something very, very bad.

Update:  Some genius has called in a bomb threat, saying that a bomb would go off if Terri Schiavo died.  All this debacle needs to make it complete is Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam to show up in support of ... well ... anything at all.

Random Wednesday Morning Art

This painting, called "Autumn Day. Sokolniki." is by the great 19th Century Russian-Jewish landscape painter Isaac Levitan.  It was painted in 1879, when Levitan was only 19 years old (Levitan, who was an extraordinarily prolific painter, died at age 40 of heart disease).  It now hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow:

Random Tuesday Morning Art

This painting, called "Winter Morning" is by Igor Grabar, who was born in Budapest but who lived most of his life in Russia after moving there with his mother at age nine.  This piece, which was painted in 1907, hangs in The Art Museum of Sevastopol in the Ukraine:

TDB News Wrap-Up

Jesse Jackson just couldn't resist the gravitational pull of so many cameras in one place, so he's sticking his nose into the Schiavo matter.  Reports indicate that the opportunistic parasite Reverend Jackson decided who's side he was on on the flight over.

There was no tsunami (thank goodness) but the death toll from the massive 8.7 magnitude quake in Indonesia may rise into the thousands.  Many, many survivors will be homeless.  Hopefully, this is the last such disaster in that area for a long while.

First a finger in chili in San Jose (just down the road from me), now a foot in a landfill in Malibu.  Folks, check carefully.  If you have lost either of these items, speak up before someone else claims them.

Another school shooting was apparently narrowly averted in South Carolina.  How about this:  People with children who own guns and do not secure them and use trigger locks go directly to jail.

Three Romanian journalists have been kidnapped in Iraq.  Question:  Would this have happened if italy and Spain hadn't paid massive ransoms to get kidnapped journalists back?  Did those countries learn nothing from Colombia and other South American countries where kidnapping for ransom has become a profitable cottage industry because of victims' unceasing willingness to pay?

'Talk is Dangerous'

That's a quote from the opening post ona DU thread ... the poster believes that the eeevil right wingers are going to go out and try to kill him and his noble liberal compatriots because Rush Limbaugh tells them to.

One observation, one question:

Observation: A person who calls himself a "liberal" comes out with "talk is dangerous" and doesn't spontaneously combust from the red-hot ironic disconnect (and virtually none of the many posters on the thread or the hundreds of readers of it mention it).

Question: I know I've asked before but when, exactly, did the American Left become completely, utterly un-ed?

Update:  Whoops!!  This is what I get for posting while tired ... I had forgotten the link.  It's there now.

Wonderful News - Lisl Auman's Conviction Reversed

I wrote briefly about Lisl Auman when I was writing about Hunter S. Thompson.  I considered her case to be one of the most blatant miscarriages of justice in the American criminal justice system  that I had ever seen.  Auman was convicted of felony murder for the murder of Denver police officer Bruce VanderJagt on Nov. 12, 1997. In fact, Lisl was not only not involved in any substantive manner in the murder but was in police custody when the murder was committed by a psychopath named Matthaeus Jaehnig, who subsequently killed himself.  Well, after almost eight years, Lisl Auman will have a new trial, and may finally get her freedom, as well as some small measure of justice.

It really is too bad that Thompson, who was a vocal and eloquent champion of her cause, isn't around to see this.

Violent Central-American Gang Threatens to Murder Americans ... DU Roots For Dead Americans

Have you heard of the Minuteman Project?  It is an effort by some ordinary citizens to patrol the horribly porous Mexican - United States border and report people coming across illegally to the proper authorities, who are woefully undermanned and cannot watch even a small part of the massive border.  Well now a notoriously vicious Central American gang called Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, has apparently decided to teach "a lesson" to the Minuteman volunteers. It is worth noting that this gang likely profits in the traffic of illegal aliens across the border.  Naturally, this story has become a topic of discussion at Democratic Underground and, predictably, many of the posters there are eagerly looking forward to the prospect of American citizens being murdered

You're not surprised, are you?

Where are the WMDs?

I never much cared one way or the other whether Iraq had WMDs.  WMDs were not the main reason that I felt (and still feel) that the war was justified.  Nevertheless, the WMD mystery is an important one and we may have recently solved part of it.  It seems that Iraqi scientists had disposed of Anthrax in 1991 ... and didn't tell anyone, including Saddam.

It Isn't Exactly Abraham and Isaac

But it looks like Kofi Annan will be sacrificing his son in an effort to save his own sorry, corrupt hide.  Maybe Kofi will explain how his 29 year old son had a position of such tremendous influence in the first place and why he (Kofi) repeatedly met with members of his son's company prior to awarding them a massive contract that is part of the oil-for-food fraud (or perhaps not).  I think that perhaps young Kojo Annan has a book in his future.

The UN is a blight that needs to be removed from this country.

Ah, So It's an Annual Hatefest, Then?

Yesterday the U.S. national soccer team played a game in Mexico City.  What was most notable about the game, from my perspective were the actions of some of the spectators.  They booed the U.S. national anthem, they chanted "Osama, Osama" after a U.S. goal and after the game they burned and trampled an American flag.  Now, if you were keeping an eye out, you may have heard about this on the news.  What you probably did not hear is that the exact same thing happened almost exactly a year ago

Question:  Is this indicative of a larger problem and, if so, what, if anything, do we do about it?

P.S.:  Of course, it could have been worse ... much worse.

A Rummy Diary - The Sad, Ugly Aftermath

As I have discussed here on TDB at some length, there is a massive schism on the left side of the American political spectrum between moderate, pro-America liberals such as Joe Lieberman, Harold Ford and others like them and raving far-left anti-American moonbats like Cynthia McKinney, Michael Moore,  Jim McDermott and their noxious ilk.  For years the Left has been screaming about and hoping for a schism on the right to match the one in their own badly divided camp.  The natural and obvious faultline on the right lay between social conservatives such as Pat Buchanan and Ralph Reed and Tom Delay and more socially liberal but foreign policy oriented neocons such as Condi Rice and Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz.  In spite of the best efforts of Pat Buchanan and the fervent hopes of the Left, the schism never really developed and the delicate yet powerful coalition stayed firmly in place.  There were two primary reasons for this:

Peace Activists For a Weaker America

"Peace" activists in Connecticut annoyed people at a submarine base on Friday (use bugmenot to register).  I wonder how they feel about one of the most advanced war machines in the fleet, the Seawolf-class nulear powered attack submarine Jimmy Carter?  I've said this before but it bears repeating:

"Peace activist" is a misnomer for these people.  They are pro-weakness and pro-appeasement activists.  A weakened United States will lead to more global misery, more atrocities and more war throughout the world.  These are people who would have let Hitler conquer every square inch of Europe, Africa and beyond.  They are not raising a peep about the genocide, slavery, mutilations and mass rapes that are going on in Rwanda, the Congo, the Sudan and elsewhere because the only solution to these horrors have nothing to do with "peace."  The results might be peace but the method must be war and since they are unthinkingly against war, they are satisfied to have the genocides and rapes and mutilations and slavery continue unabated.

"Peace activists?"  I don't think so.

What? Another Jihad? YAWN!!

Yet another petty warlord, this time in Somalia, threatens yet another jihad so that he can continue to keep his boot heel on the necks of the people that have been unfortunate enough to fall under his influence.  People like this need to be killed.  Not talked with, not threatened, not given ultimatums to.  Killed.  Immediately, completely and without warning.  If his location can be ascertained, a ship about 20 miles off shore needs to fire its big guns and destroy him and his men.  The same should be done for the next psychopath who talks about jihad and the next and the next until the message gets through or the supply of psychopath warlords dries up.

Somalia is a place that we will have to eventually clean up.  We may as well start with Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys.

Slightly Modified Blog Look

You may have notices that TDB is a bit less colorful today with the artwork and the beautiful women gone from the front page.  Worry not.  They are all still here but are hiding behind the "Read More" tags that are to be found onsome of my longer posts and some of the posts with pictures.  This will allow TDB to load more quickly and look a little neater and more compact and will actually allow people with dial-up modems to be able to view this page.

Disturbing News Out of Iraq

Do you remember the story from a few days ago of the Islamists beating students to death for having a picnic?  Well, Zeyad of Healing Iraq has much more on this terrible story.  One point that sticks out is that witnesses say that there were British troops and Iraqi policement nearby and they did nothing.  I hope that this isn't true but I fear that it is.  If it is true, the Americans might have to deal with Basra and the Islamists there down the road because the British won't.
